FAQ

Good to know before you come

If you have a question that isn’t covered here, send us a message and we’ll be happy to help.

Do I need to book in advance?

For accommodation, we strongly recommend booking ahead, especially during school holidays and peak season from June to October. Day visitors are generally welcome without a booking, but checking opening hours and conditions before you come is always a good idea.

Can I visit just for the day?

Yes. Day visitors are welcome during our opening hours. A park entry fee applies, which helps us care for the environment and wildlife. You’ll have access to walking tracks, swimming spots and picnic areas.

Is Granite Gorge suitable for young children?

Many families visit with children of all ages. Some walking areas have uneven ground and steep sections, so children should be supervised closely at all times. We recommend sturdy shoes, hats and plenty of drinking water.

Are pets allowed in the park?

Because Granite Gorge is a nature park with native wildlife, pets are not allowed. This helps us protect the resident animals, especially the rock wallabies. If you are camping or staying you are allowed to bring your dog but they have to stay on a lead and with you at all times. Please note that they are NOT allowed on the gorge.

How far is Granite Gorge from Cairns?

Granite Gorge is located near Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands, around 1–1.5 hours’ drive from Cairns by car, depending on your route and traffic.
